Questions about Linen
How should we wash and maintain linen?
All our products are machine washable and dry-cleanable. For optimal results, we recommend following the instructions below:
- Unfold your linen products before washing.
- Make sure your machine is not overloaded.
- Wash at a maximum temperature of 40°C.
- Use a mild soap. Avoid chlorine bleach.
- If possible, hang linen to dry on a clothesline. This is better for the product and the environment.
- If you use a dryer, avoid excessively high temperatures or “extra dry” programs.
- It is best to iron with a steam iron on linen that is still slightly damp (and inside out).
What does the Belgian Linen logo mean?
Fabric bearing the Belgian Linen™ label is woven in Belgium using flax of Western European origin. You can only use this label if you meet the following criteria:
- The linen must be woven in a weaving mill in Belgium
- At least 85% of the flax used must come from Western European flax growers
Belgian Linen stands for craftsmanship with an eye for the highest possible quality. Flax is one of the most sustainable fibers in the world. Thanks to a combination of its natural properties and the expertise of its craft, Belgian linen is considered a linen fabric that feels comfortable and is very durable . Moreover, Belgian linen lasts a lifetime .
What is GOTS?
A selection of Libeco Home collections meets GOTS standards.
GOTS stands for the 'Global Organic Textile Standard' and is globally recognized as the standard for creating and processing textiles based on organically grown fibers. Its difference from other certification systems lies in its focus on every aspect of the production process. Each product must meet a set of criteria at every stage of the production process, with the goal of achieving organic certification .
Labor-related criteria such as working conditions, pay and safety are also taken into account.
Moreover, flax is a very sustainable fiber. Here are some reasons why:
- No irrigation : the flax plant thrives in the Belgian climate (wet and moderate), so no additional irrigation is required.
- No chemicals : The flax used in our organic collections was grown naturally and organically. No genetically modified crops, fertilizers, or chemicals were used to promote the growth process.
- There is no waste : all parts of the plant serve as raw material for a wide range of applications and products.
Why CO2 neutral?
Since 2011, our weaving mill has been working with co2logic, our partner who maps all our activities and their impact on the environment and advises us on reducing our ecological footprint . Together, we developed a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Green energy, LED lighting, solar panels, a more environmentally friendly car fleet, and waste management optimization are just a few of the measures we've implemented.
We compensate for the emissions we cannot reduce in the short term by reducing CO2 emissions elsewhere in the world. For example, we support an international climate project in Uganda . The organization manufactures energy-efficient wood-burning stoves that are distributed to the local population in Uganda, where cooking is often still done on open fires. Each wood-burning stove reduces CO2 emissions by 1.4 tons per year. In addition, such a stove combats deforestation and improves the health of every family member.
Since 2014, our weaving mill has been recognised as a CO2-neutral company.
